Hi all, im new here and just got my first minor 1000 and already in love! however the first thing on my list of jobs is a kicking noise coming from the fuel pump. It occurs prior to ignition when the key i half turned and continues once i start her up. Seems to fluctuate in speed too! anyone got any ideas? Looking forward to posting on here regularly

Sounds like normal operation.
When the ignition is turned on the pump starts up (the kicking sound) and fills the float chamber.
At speed the engine needs more fuel and the pump delivers more fuel (more kicking).
Check that the float chamber is not leaking by turning on the ignition (but not start the engine) and run your hand under the float chamber if no petrol present all is well.

The standard fuel pump on a Morris Minor is an electrical one. As soon as the ignition is switched on , the fuel pump will
" tick " as it fills the carburettor fuel bowl. The " ticking " will increase in speed , in direct relation to the car increasing it's acceleration as the carb calls for " more fuel ".
The " ticking " often catches out a new Moggie owner , convincing them that they have a problem when they don't.
It's normal... so relax and enjoy. You're not the first and won't be the last , no shame.

If it is a solid " kicking noise " then jump back in again !!

Ah thats a tick off the list then and thanks all for the quick replies!

It should be a barely audible 'tick' from a standard SU pump - but some of the non-standard after market pumps (why do people fit them ?? ) make more noise - and can be mounted on little rubber bobbin mounts if the noise is too irritating.

Ah there may be an issue then as it's very loud, can hear it over the engine on tickover loud.

If your referring to the Hardi aftermarket pumps Roy then I have to disagree with you, mine has been fitted for over 4 years and has not let me down, yes they are noisy but it can be cured by rubber mounts.
They can't be that bad if the Ferrari boys like them

My only point was to fit rubber mounts - I make no comment (nor do I have any knowledge) of reliability. But I just don't see why folks don't stick with the original model - the SU. They seem to work well enough for 40 maybe 50 years !
