Am i being dumb or is the clutch????

Sorry guys,
Bit of a dumb day for me today, I have just put all of the clutch linkage back together only it seems it is working backwards. My knowledge of how the clutch mechanism actually works is not that great but I believe it is back together exactly how it was before only now attached to my 5speed ford box. When you press the lever the cluth release part (dont know the proper name, in the gearbox) moves away from the clutch, shouldnt it move towards the clutch? or have i not secured something correctly? Any advice much appreciated, i can get some photos if needed.
Cheers
Martyn

Ummm......... well the clutch throw arm causes a de-clutch when the exposed end is moved towards the rear of the car. Are you sill using the mechanical linkage or have you converted to cable or hydraulic? Pictures would perhaps help.

Hello MM,
if the exposed part clutch arm in the gearbox moves to the rear that is correct. Have you adjust the free play, there should be about 1\16" to 1\8"th free travel at the end of the clutch release arm with the pedal in the up position.

Hello MM,

if that is the case the link bar between the gearbox and the chassis member must be upside down., if that's possible?

Hello again MM,

I have just re-read your first post and see Ford. Does it use the purely mechanical Minor clutch linkage?, if so my earlier post is still relevant.

Right, well for a start, the ball-nut on the adjuster rod going to the throw arm is on the wrong way around. It should be pulling and not pushing.

The rest seem OK I think, except that the two plates need securing to the relay shaft in the same way that they are secured to the end of the pedal.

No, that looks correct. The long rod should move towards the rear of the car when the pedal is pressed down, right? If so, thats fine.

the rod moves towards the front of the car when pressing the lever

Looking at that picture, when you press the clutch pedal down (to the right in the picture), the rod will move to the rear of the car.

Well spotted Cam, about the ball nut.

I don't see how this can physically posibally occure if it's all set up as in the photos. :-? Hmmm, unless the pedal is getting depressed so much that the relay shaft is turning past it's normal maximal angle and then starts pushing. But this would be highly unlikely.

Agreed, Mr A. I can't see it either. Looking at this photo:

It can't possibly move the other way when the clutch pedal is pressed down.

cheers guys,
it was as i thought it is me being dumb, just needed confirmation. Far too long spent in the cold looking at the underside of the car made me forget my forwards and backwards. Its good to know it is almost back together how it should be though. Just hope it all works now.

No probs mate, it happens to all of us. Sometimes you just need to step back and look at things, or go and have a cuppa and think about it in the warm!

Glad it's all coming together though! :D
