Dynamo to Alternator

Post by MsRose »

My first (no stripped down) morris 1000 arrives today. It's a 1962 two door.

I'd like to change the dynamo to an alternator and wondered if this was a fairly easy job and what sort of modifications have to be made etc?

At the top of this forum there's a wiring diagram and also a link to a video showing how to fit an alternator - it's a fairly easy job.

If the car is negative earth and you buy an Alternator Kit from somebody like ESM ,then as Louise says it's pretty easy. Don't forget the dynamo is heavy , so be prepared when you take the bolts out.

Why change it if it's working ? Dynamo systems are very reliable and perfectly suitable for normal Minor use.

easy job and a great upgrade. I can run loads of extra electrical items on the upgrade and have fitted better headlights.

'Better' headlights are presumably Halogen - and actually use slightly LESS power than the old sealed beams.... So unless going Rallying and adding some Super Oscars to the front of the car - the dynamo will cope just fine.

don't forget the stereo, lighter socket, neon lights underneath, keyless entry system, 6 air-horns, electric windows, electric ariel, power seats, air con and power inverter for 230v hook up.

I do need an alternator.
