HORN!!! - Not working...

Post by ExMODtraveller »

Hi my horn doesn't work on my traveller. I have linked wires direct from the battery and it works fine. So I'm guessing something in the button is wrong?? I have took the old button out and I have a new one ready to go in but how do I test that it will work first??? (I don't want to push it in cos they crack when flicking them out).

Has anyone else had a problem with their horn?

Thanks.

I had this problem it was the connection to the steering column slip ring.

try shorting the wire to earth eg the big nut that holds the wheel on and horn should work.the horn should have 12 volts to it on one terminal while ignition is on, the other terminal goes back to the column, on most models a slip ring is incorperated close to the indicator stork which could be giving trouble, the button completes the circuit to earth/ground, i think the horn gets its 12 volt from the same fuse as the interior light hope this helps graham, amendment sorry the horn and interior light should work even when ingnition is in off position

Yes the interior light is working so the fuse is not blown. There is only one black wire that runs on its own through the stalk into the steering wheel I think.

Can you explain it to me as if I'm completely useless with wires. ( cos I sort of am lol ). Thankyou.

Check the contact is riding on the slip ring. Otherwise - as the others have advised.

the purple wire to the horn should have 12 volts permanently live, even when you are not pressing horn button, the purple with black tracer goes from the horn to under dash bullet connector.try shorting the purple black lead at the horn to body and the horn should sound, if it does find the purple/black under dash and short to body the horn should sound, this should connect to the copper spring which presses on the slip ring, make sure it is in good contact with the slip ring, a wire from the slip ring passes through the column to the centre terminal on the horn button, when the button is pressed a circuit is made to the steering wheel boss which is at earth potential through the steering rack which is bolted to the chassis/body. This is a logical way to trace out the fault, good luck, if you still have problem message back with your finding and i will try to give more assistance.Graham
