Overhauling starter motor

I don't have a means to compress the the spring on the be did. Does anyone have a trick up their sleeve that would help me?

Truthfully. Buy a new starter, they are only about £50

However if you do want to pull the Bendix apart I'm sure there will be some tips forthcoming

Our local auto electrician rebuilds them in 30 mins. About £25 plus vat.

Unless you have a very early starter motor with the bendix spring/gear retained by a nut you will require one of these:

If you are careful a couple of pairs of mole grips can be used, its fiddly but do able like that, just mind your fingers.

As per Phils post the right tool makes it one hell of a lot easier as it is a tough spring. I made my spring compressor in the end on a bored Sun afternoon in the workshop.

Indeed I made a very simple compressor for my starter overhaul. I would be wary of using Mole grips - it's a powerful spring.

Do not use Mole wrenches under any circumstances. Life ending or life changing injury might result.
