Replacing gaskets

Afternoon all!...

I'm just about to order up some gaskets... namely the
rocker cover,
the inlet/exhaust gasket
and the side/tappet gaskets x2 (neoprene)..

and i'm wondering what else, if anything, is needed to replace these...gasket sealant? nuts/washers etc...??

Any help would be great thanks! :D

Give that new inlet/exhaust gasket a smear of grease on both sides. It works wonders and it allows you to re-use the gasket if required.
New brass manifold nuts (Pt No: GHF261 (MOSS)) would not go amiss. To make life easier use the double length (Pt No: GHF261A (MOSS)) ones for the four centre studs.
How about the rocker cover top seals/grommets (Pt No: 12A1358 (MOSS)). Qty 2 required.
Do not forget the two washers either fibre (PT No: 2K4958 (MOSS)) or the rubber seal (Pt No: 12A1176 (MOSS)) that fit the bolts holding the cam follower covers.
There is no requirement to use any sealant.

As above - please - no grotty sealant.... Note the neoprene seals are only suitable for the later 1098 cam follower covers. And 'Declan' makes a much better alternative! The cork rocker cover gasket should be lightly glued to the rocker cover with just a little contact adhesive - and then you can use it over and over again.

Hmm, I've just gone on to that website and I think i'll have to put a new shopping list together!! lol

I was using bull motif and it doesn't list different choices..convex concave, rubber cork, etc!!

I'll have a look at those part numbers you've put up and then add to that.... back in a mo.

So part numbers... from the morris minor spares (bull motif) are

Rocker cover gasket .......Part No: 10M215
Inlet/exh gasket............Part No: 10M304 (doesn't say what its made from?)
Side tappet gasket x 2 ....Part No: 10M512 (neoprene)

By cam follower covers..are these the same as side/tappet covers?

I've just worked out that 'Declan' is a person! haha, so does he make them to sell on?

So I'm thinking i need...

brass manifold nuts x 4? There are 6 nuts, but it looks like the four inner ones come with a washer and the 'bolt' isn't threaded all the way.

My tappet covers are both concave..

The fibre and rubber seal for the bolts on these covers look quite different, which should i get?

and some pictures of my 1098...

In no particular order:-
The cam follower cover bolts seals for your engine covers should be 12A1176.
You appear to be missing the cup washers, seal (Pt No: 12A1177 (MOSS)) that fit under the head of the bolt and into which the seal 12A1176 fits.
There are in total 6 manifold nut but you can use the longer ones to make life easier on the four centre ones.
The studs do not have threads all the way down.
You appear not to have the cup washers (Pt No: 1A2156 (MOSS)) that fit over the rocker cover seals.
The gasket material is the same what ever supplier you use.
The side engine covers are the same whatever terminology you use - but the correct name is 'cylinder side cover(s)'. The covers give access to the cam followers. To be correct there are no tappets on an Morris Over/head/Valve engine (OHV), Tappets act directly on the bottom of the valve stem as in a Morris 'Side/Valve' (SV) engine.

Thanks Phil!!

so i need...

manifold gasket...(can't find this in the engine section of morris minor on MOSS)
manifold nuts..... 2 x GHF261, 4 x GHF261A (do i keep the green washer seen in picture 2 and the long bolt goes on after that? or do the washers get done away with?)

cylinder side cover gaskets x 2 ....GUG5505GM
seal rubber x 2........................12A1176
cup washer x 2 .......................12A1177

rocker cover gasket...(can't find this in the engine section of morris minor on MOSS)
cup washer x 2 ..............1A2156
rubber seal x 2 ..............12A1358

There are no 'bolts' holding the manifold - they are studs - screwed in to the head. Phil has suggested brass nuts mainly because in time they are often lost (or stripped) - and replaced with steel nuts - which then seize on the studs....sometimes causing snapped studs... And I agree - the 'long' brass nuts make life easier in the centre 4 positions (even more so on a Mini where access is decidedly limited) . You only need one thick washer in there - I see some studs have two washers for some reason. Why do you want to change the manifold gasket - is it leaking? You 'may' be lucky enough to do it without disconnecting the exhaust pipe - but maybe not.. Try to order all the parts from one supplier - otherwise postage cost tends to exceed the cost of the parts!

Manifold gasket easily found in the link below - item no 94. Pt No: AJM601.

http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-mo ... 009a2.html

The rocker cover gasket is item No: 16 in the link above. You have a choice of three. All are suitable for the job.

Where there are two washers fitted it is because the original thick washer is missing and using the two washers will do but it is second best to using the correct washer Pt No: 2A110.

The main reasons for my quoting MOSS part numbers is that the part numbers MOSS quote are in the main in line with the official BMC/BL parts lists numbers and that you can actually see an exploded parts diagram from which the relative part can be identified and its orientation/relation to the other parts.
Not all suppliers of Minor parts offer that service/ability and not all Minor owners have access to official BMC/BL parts lists.

Indeed - the correct thick washers were used for good reason - the 2xthin washers are bending in the picture, And it looks like you will have problems with the front 'end' nut and stud which look to be well corroded. At least wire brush and dose with Plus-Gas a few hours before attempting. But again - don't change the old gasket unless there is good reason!

Thanks for the responses guys...

very helpful indeed! I have an oil leak and as yet i haven't been able to identify where it's coming from.... I'm going to get some engine degreeser on there, give the block a good clean up, and hopefully identify where said leak is. In the meantime I thought I'd try and get a list together of what may be needed.

Thanks again!

And yeh the wire brush and plus-gas is on standby! lol

Well - the manifold gasket won't be leaking oil - by all means get a spare (maybe as well to get a head gasket set) - but don't tackle it unless you need to.
