Hi There

I'm just undergoing a bit of light restoration to our 1957 Saloon 1000 (1098cc). At some point in its past it's had a fairly decent front disc conversion, with (I think) Girling calipers. Unfortunately I can't find any details in the huge stack of receipts we've got with the car.

The front calipers had seized and the pads were right down. I've managed to free off the calipers and now need new ones, but not sure which ones to order?

I *think* they are these ones from ESM, DSK101s from a Morris Marina






Before I buy them, can anyone help?

They look very like Mini Cooper S pads - more so in the worn picture, less so in the ESM link which appears to make them more elongated.

They are not classic cooper S with either 8.4" or 7" discs.
The disc pad shown have the same dimensions as the NOS Ferodo Pt No: FDB810M 20089 14.40 suitable for Marian/Ital I have on the shelf.

Remember them well, 100% again for them being Marina pads, I had one !.

But they may also be the early Cooper S pads - they look VERY like them. Unfortunately - I gave away the two sets I had in stock just a couple of weeks ago.

Indeed - much the same then -they don't always have the gutter up the middle.

For those not in the know the 'gutter' is there to help clear the dust / crud and water from the disc pad.
I have similar gutters on the brake shoes of my trail bike.

Oh yes - indeed - I used to cut a shallow gutter in the DS11 pads for my Riley Elf 1275 S rally car!

Just like to say thanks very much to philthehill - He was correct, they are marina/ital pads. Ordered a new set and they fit great

Just need to try and cure the spongy pedal now - will try changing the fluid and bleeding, and if that doesn't work a new master cylinder I guess?

Are the rear brakes adjusted correctly? You should not need a new master cylinder - just bleed the brakes properly and inspect the flexi pipes for any sign of swelling under presure.

Good suggestion - thanks. I think the flexis will be OK, they are goodridge braided hoses and only look a few years old.

How does one go about adjusting the rear shoes? I had assumed they were self adjusting.

Thanks for all your ideas, I do appreciate it. Modern stuff I'm kinda OK with (I've built my own kit car) but pre 1960 stuff really has me scratching me head sometimes!

Far from it! First slacken the handbrake cables - then adjust up the brakes with screwdriver through the hole in the drum till 'just lightly rubbing' - then retighten the cables to put the handbrake where you like it. If you don't have a Manual - download one free from Google !
