is it possible to remove the centre from a riveted wheel and add it the a mgb wheel (also riveted)
to make up a 5 1/2" wheel?

Some have done it using modern car rims - but it's a lot of work, and you would need to be very confident of your welding skills - and being able to get the rim exactly concentric. Indeed I mocked one up using a Veauxhall rim and Minor centre - but chickened out when it came to the welding - and also the lack of 'thickness' in the Minor centre compared to the one that came off the Vauxhall wheel concerned me.... Are MGB wheels 5 1/2" ??? I rather doubt it... Not too sure how your insurance Co will take it when you phone them to explain what you have done......

Whilst every thing is possible I personally would advise against it if you are considering it as a DIY job.
May I politely ask why you feel the need to undertake the exercise when there may be a ready made combination of wheel rim and centre available.
All of the MGB steel wheels for sale on 'e' bay (and there are several sets available) are 5J not 5.5J

So - not standard MG wheels - and look at the state of them!

As above - not standard MGB wheels.
They were removed from 'e' bay 22nd Jan 07:33. Well before I looked and definitely well before the original post above.

Did you buy them?

I gave up the idea of using Minor centres when I saw how much thinner the steel is - than the Vauxhall wheel from which I was removing the centre. I'm not 'sure' - but I think the wide van wheels have thicker steel centres.

I looked into buying them but not sure worth all the hassle might just go for Wellers

I think them minor vans had wider wheels, have a look for some of them.
Dunno how wide they are but a bit wider than standard ones I think.
