HELP! Insurance inc business use £850! F/James say no!

I've been insured @ Footman James fully comp + recovery etc <£150 (2000 mile limit).

Now I'm private tutoring about 5 x per week in my local areas, so I need to include "business use" (not "commuting to a single place of business") but still maximum 3000 miles/year.

Best quote I've had from 2gether (classic car specialists, they claim) is £865 for 9 months! (Basic: no breakdown cover.

Firstly: am I completely mad to use my Moggie for business, albeit small local trips to peoples' houses (and this will get less and less as I grow my business and would be mostly home-based) ?!

Either way: has anyone been in a similar situation - any recommendations?

Brokers just don't get cars past a certain age. When I got my Moggie & went to a comparison site, premium quotes were £850 min, right up to more zeros than I can remember!

BTW: this is for a '68 2-door saloon (which some brokers claim "doesn't exist"/"computer says no").
I've got 10 years NCB, no points, no convictions, car parked in a locked compound, and my job title is company director (I think putting down "self-employed" is like putting down "Ram Raider" as a profession!)

It's my only car. I can't keep two cars. And I would be gutted to have to lose the Bellenden Falcon and get ... UGH! ... a Nissan or something (The Horror!)

Any tips? Thanks in advance.

I should contact MMOC HQ and ask them to mediate on your behalf. 01332 291675 Ask for Liz Saxon.

My husband drives a '62 2 dr (doesn't possess a modern car) into Birmingham every day and has commuting to/from work on his insurance with Footman James.

When i added A1 business use to one of my own (modern) cars it cost an extra 15 quid plus the admin.
It must be because it's a classic car that you are getting such mad quotes,
Al

Have you tried RH Insurance? They are usually very understanding. But I do suspect your use of the car is hardly 'business use' - possibly 'commuting' or just leave it as social use. It's not as if you are roaming the country flogging brushes on the doorstep.....

All I can say is shop around - I had a 20 year old celica gt-four (4wd, twin turbo, an absolute 150 mph monster) and paid just over £400 inc business use, 6000 miles per year limit.

I agree with Roy, I've found RH to be excellent

Dave at Footman James sometimes posts here, I would try him direct and see if he can help.

I have an everyday classic policy with them for the car sitting outside, 6000 miles and commuting though not business use specified for £236. In comparison, I have 5 other minors on one policy from them with unlimited miles for £238!!!!! But you must have an everyday car to get the classic policy.

One of my customers insures his traveller for business use. Costs £175 instead of about £80 for normal use but he does special glass windows - stained glass etc and travels to the site. Unlimited mileage, pretty sure its with one of the classic insurers poss FJ.
