CHANGING ENGINE IN 1962MORRIS 1000
CAN ANYONE HELP ME?
I HAVE BEEN OFFERED A MORRIS A+ ENGINE AND I WANT TO FIT THE FORD SIERRA 5 SPEED BOX
INTO A 1962 MORRIS 1000.
CAN THIS BE DONE EASILY? AND WILL THEY BE A GOOD MARRIAGE?
WOULD IT BE A GOOD MOVE?
I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ANSWERS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

yes it can be done, its a very expensive conversion.
i think parts alone are several hundred....

The 'A' plus Marina/Ital 1275cc engine and the type 9 gearbox are good replacements for the Minor engine and gearbox.
Installing the engine & gearbox is easy if you purchase the kit.
Additionally you will need replacement rear and front engine plates (or use your own front plate), both available and easy to install.
The down side is the cost which will run to about £1.5k plus when fully fitted and completed if the kit and replacement gearbox are purchased even if you do the installation yourself.
This is the conversion kit minus the gearbox.

Here is a complete kit of parts - whilst it may be suitable for an MG Midget - similar components are used when converting the Minor.
Note the cost and that excludes the dreaded VAT!

Here is a type 9 gearbox and £300 is the average price for an unknown condition S/H unit.

The Ford 2000E 4 speed gearbox is an alternative to the type 9 and is usually cheaper to purchase than the type 9.
These gearboxes were fitted as part of the original Ford gearbox conversion offered by CS Autoclassics and I had one of these 2000E gearboxes fitted to my Minor. It has better ratios than the Minor and has the benefit of synchro on first gear.

Or, instead of spending the money on a bell housing, you could spend it on a 2nd hand zetec engine. Someone mentioned £1500 to fit a 1275, for that you could buy the Omex ?? injector kit, a scrap mondeo, modified sump and a water rail.
Of course, I assuming if you are looking at a 1275 conversion that your car already has disc brakes.
I personally think the engine is nolonger the problem, its the back axle. Mk1/2 Escort & Capri axles are a fortune now. What else are people considering and without getting too wide. TR7 axles can easily be had for £100 and the stud would match Marina front brakes or as a curve ball, has anyone noticed how narrow the Suzuki Supercarry vans are. The later ones also have 1.3 engines so it's debatable if their axles would cope with a zetec engine but they certainly look a nice size for a parts source but they're mid engined.
Unfortunately, I would have to pay a professional for this kind of work but it all makes excellent reading.

It is the half-shafts that are the weak point in a Minor transmission and if spirited driving is to be undertaken the half-shafts should be upgraded.
If the Minor axle is fitted with the BTA diff carrier and the uprated half-shafts the Minor rear axle is perfectly adequate and more than capable of coping with the power output of a 1275cc engine even when well tuned.
The Minor axle fitted into my comp Minor has served me well over the years and only once has the diff failed and that was when the diff planet gear pin broke - but the diff assy by then was many years old and had covered many miles of hard driving.
Here is a list of diffs which show which vehicles had BTA diff carriers.
