Morris Minor Owners Club

My Morris 1000 is my day to day car (its the only car I own) and im considering 'upgrading' to an electonic ignition like the one linked below.
Over the last few years i must have gone through a dozen condensors and they only seem to pack up in the pitch dark when Im away from home....
I know its not original but for the praticality I think It might be the way forward for me, missing a days work because of a £2 part dieing is a real pain!
Has anyone got one fitted and are they as reliable as the reviews suggest?
Is the £90 price bracket right for this sort of 'upgrade'?

Yup! I have an Accuspark unit on both my Traveller and Series III Land-Rover. Absolutely brilliant and dead easy to swap.

For the last few years or so, Ive also been plagued with endless Condensor gremlins. New Lucas points / condensors just arent what they used to be any more, so I too bit the bullet and bought an Accuspark electronic ignition kit.

I was happy for about 3 months with the electronic igntion, but then whilst enroute to a car show the ignition module within the dist completely died. Luckily I carried a spare old used filthy dirty distributor complete with old points/condensor and i was running again.

I sent the stealth accuspark kit back to accuspark and in total fairness to them they replaced it all in warranty no quibbles asked, but I had lost faith in the electronic system and it never got refitted.

To date the old conventional distributor is still fitted to the pickup now.

I note a company called distributor doctor (and ESM sell them too), but spend a little more than the usual modern lucas rubbish and buy the £9ish condensor known as the distributor doctor type.

We have 2 Minors in daily use and both still have standard contacts and condensers. A quick clean and adjustment of the contacts about once a year and I've never had a problem but I always stick to ORIGINAL Lucas parts, none of the repro "Lucas" stuff in green boxes. There is plenty or new/original good quality stuff available if you look - otherwise use the "Distributor Doctor" who I have only heard good things about though never needed myself.

To me, the whole point of running a Morris Minor is to have a car which I understand and can maintain myself. If my modern car goes wrong it is always "electronics" which give trouble so I prefer to avoid such complications where I have the choice. I know of two local Minor owners who have had their cars die at the roadside when the "upgrade" of electronic ignition failed.......

I have upgraded my 948 to the Accuspark module only, It does start and run better and smoother. I do keep a set of Distributor Doctor points and condensor in the boot for emergency. If you decide to stay with points and condensor then the only place I would reccommend for them is Distributor Doctor.
The one thing I read in the instructions was that the modules are sensitive to an increase in voltage above 14v which will damage them. Now I don't know under what circumstances others have had failed modules but it could be that they are running with a dynamo and have had an increase in output which could lead to a failed module.

i think the stealth kit that has been refered to is a bit elaborate for a moggy i just got the the £50 pound complete dizzy fitted it set the timing by ear its run fine for 10 years , i just change the rotor arm and dizzy cap every 2 years or so about 10000 miles worth its a good system works well enough for me .

I fitted a Powerspark electronic 45d distributor just under a year ago and haven't had a single problem with it. I haven't touched it since it was installed (apart from to swap it over to my new engine!) It starts and runs completely reliably and has been well worth it. My reasons for fitting it were the same as yours; I kept having condensers fail. The good thing about buying a complete electronic distributor is that you don't only get the electronic ignition but you also get a new, working vacuum advance and a mechanical advance that isn't gummed up. My engine instantly ran a lot better after fitting it and I'm sure that was due to the new distributor rather than the electronics.
