Its that time again for those noted Morris Minor past quotes and references.

Here are two :-

William Morris's first reaction to the new Minor " It looks more like a poached egg !"

Ronnie Barker as Arkright in Open All Hours " I am very fond of the M-Morris M-Minor with its lovely large rounded b-bonnet at front and its shapely b-boot at back. It reminds me of a certain state registered person!"

I sure there are a few others -, amusing, editorial or advertising etc. from the past ???

I'm trying really hard to think of a genuine quotation that wouldn't get me banned from the forum...

There was Edna Everage's voice over of a tourist film featuring Stratford on Avon. He/she was just commenting on the lovely half-timbered houses when a Traveller pops in to the bottom of the shot. "Ooh look, a half-timbered car!"

The opening two sentences from The Autocar road test of NWL 576 stick in my mind.

"Now and again it happens that circumstances bring a person suddenly into prominence, and he or she instantly becomes a favourite in the public affections. Something similar occurs sometimes with new cars, and it is likely to happen to the new Morris Minor."

Even from the start it was a winner.

Interestingly NWL is shown without a boot badge, perhaps they just forgot to put it on!

From an early Minor sales brochure from Morris Motors publicity dept :-

"A surge of power on hills - breathtaking acceleration to whip you away from traffic..... "

"BIG car performance - BIG car driving ease - Big car features - BIG car roominess - BIGGEST value in motoring"

Its Britains BIGGEST Small Car

Yes, and also most regularly

"My Dad/Brother/Sister had one of those" or "I learnt to drive in one of those"

Variation on last quote: Having taken a pair of wheels to my local tyre depot for tyre renewal the fitter asked what car they were off. Told him '66 Minor 1000. He said he thought he had been conceived in one of those. Told him it had nothing to do with me; think he believed me!

I was once told by friends that their daughter was named Heather because that is where she was conceived. I've never able to meet anyone called Austin or Morris without thinking of that since. :)

Alec Issigonis, indeed, was a most rare genius of his day - of Greek family descent he reminded others that in ancient Greece there was no separate words for 'Art' and 'Craft' they were one and the same.
The end result of 'Being right' and 'Looking right' he stated were one and the same to him.
