Sorry Posted this under wrong heading.Having purchased new drums brake shoes and cylinders for my 69 traveller twelve months ago i have now got some problems. I have done about five thousand mile on new brakes and all was well until a couple of months ago. While braking when brakes are warm i've got a binding and some squeal.I have cleaned all brakes out with brake spray and swapped drums with opposite sides but still have the same problem.Has anyone got any ideas,could i have some drum warp from heat ?

Are all the cylinders free moving? Are the rear brakes also all new - and still working well?

Hi yes all drums are new and cylinders are all working.If it is drum warp as I thought, where is the best place to purchase. The ones which are on were from David manners. Thanks for the help guys.

The parts are a year old now -not 'new' . If the cylinders are the pattern type - they could well be faulty after a year. I doubt it is drum warp.... Do the brakes work ok - not pulling to one side or the other? If you still have the old drums - put them back on ! Why did you change the drums in the first place??

Hi yes the front cylinders were pattern but it does not pull to one side under hard braking.The drums were replaced when I bought the car because they were scrap,very badly scored and even the rims on the outer edges had gone due to rot .

when you say the brakes are binding, what do you mean exactly, i.e. does it feel as though the brake is still on and slowing you down, if so pull up and feel the wheels, if they are binding ,one or more will be hot. you will therefore isolate where the problem lies. if only one then probably a sticking brake cylinder. if two or more then start looking at the master cylinder/brake pedal sticking (when you press the brake does the clutch pedal also move a bit by any chance) If you have a warped drum (Unlikely ) you would feel the brake pedal pulsating and get a juddering,Just need a bit more info.

Thanks for help.Now you have told me about the brake pedal moving I really don't think it is drum warp.when I say binding,when you are braking you can here an on off feel accompanied with some low squeal .I am going to do about forty mile today so will get out and see if I can feel any heat. Can I check the cylinders with drum off if I get someone to carefully press the pedal or is that a bad idea ?

You can - but you need to 'trap' one cylinder while someone gently presses the pedal so you can observe the other moving. There are some rubbish brake shoes on sale these days - squeal is usually down to poor brake material and/or dust. Or perhaps the shoes have become 'glazed' after some heavy use ? Maybe a new set of good quality shoes (Ferodo or Mintex) is the way to go - if all cylinders are moving. The pattern front cylinders are notorious .......not a good buy.

Having soaked (probably wrongly ) one set of shoes in WD40 in effort of moving a drum, I assume the shoe linings are now scrap, or would it evaporate off after a quick use ?
