Hey all,

Out of interest how much movement should be in the gear stick, as in how much does it move? Mine seems to be quite loose and to get into reverse I have to really pull the stick into the driver's seat to get it into gear.

This stick seems to wobble!

Anyone got a video of their gear stick movement? Weird question I know!

Check the rubber O ring at the base of the lever, it often splits and falls off

On one of our cars with this problem I replaced the metal plate which retains the gearstick. This had worn greatly and this simple job transformed the gearchange. The three fixing screws can also simply come loose which won't help.....
It is possible (though perhaps unlikely) that you have the wrong gearstick. It is possible to fit the gearstick from the earlier gearbox to a later one and that too will mean a poor gearchange.

Same thoughts as ManyMinors above.
Check that the gear stick retaining plate (Pt No: 2A3339(MOSS)) has not come loose or is excessively worn.
Also make sure that you have the right gear lever fitted - it is not unknown for the wrong gear lever to be fitted.
The 938cc gear lever is Pt No: 2A3417 & the 1098cc gear lever is part number 22A492.

There is also a plastic cup in there - may be missing, or detached from the lever.

Moss are unable to supply apperently.

What part is the retainer as per this diagram?[frame][/frame]

Item No: 56 is the retaining plate.
Item No: 45 is the plastic cup referred to by bmc.

Here's some links for you. The first two are for the plastic cup that sits under the gear stick and its associated spring, the next two are for the anti- rattle plunger and spring, a simple device but one that's definitely better in place than lost. The fifth one is for the rubber 'O' ring that pushes into the groove on the bottom of the gearstick.
Lastly a link to eBay for what looks like a 1098 gearstick with the mounting plate you might need and a gearknob (always good to have spares...).

Here is a pic of the two types of gearlever. Its difficult to identify if you have the wrong one, but a 948 one in a 1098 box made me think there was something wrong with reverse. The correct lever cured it.[frame][/frame]

My understanding is that the ribcase is long and the smoothcase short.

The 1098cc/1275cc MG Midget gear lever is a much nicer gear lever and can be obtained in normal or anti-vibration mode.
The later the lever the less wear is usually to be found.
