Piston rings?

Post by Orinoko »

Hi.I have a 1098 engine with 43000 genuine miles on clock. Its smoking a bit and using oil.
Got 185 psi across all 4 bores.2 different gauges one snap on.
Pulled the head and discovered a bent exhaust valve and the valve stem seals seem a bit hard.
Poured some diesel into bores and it took 12 hours to drain past rings.Bores are all smooth with no ridge at top.
Will be replacing valve and reseating valves with new seals.
Should I replace piston rings or leave well alone?

185 is unusually/unbelievably high - and how could a cylinder with a bent valve (how did that happen??) make 185 psi compression???

Not sure how the bent valve happened.
And I agree about the high compression, there wasn't even any carbon in the head.
Might do the rings anyway as i already have them.
Any tips on fitting rings?

Orinoko,

Where are you based? I have a glaze busting tool, if you live anywhere near Oxford?

When fitting the piston rings make sure that you get them the right way up!
