front and rear brake drums

Post by estepona1999 »

I have a 1958 traveller and want to overhaul my braking system, with new wheel cylinders, flexible hoses, brake pipes and drums. My car was a 948cc,but now upgraded to 1098,my question is are the front and rear drums the same item or are they different,ie different part numbers? Thanks

Identical 7" drums on a 948 engine car , but with a 1098 engine you will be WELL advised to upgrade the front brakes to the later (1098 car) 8" front brakes.

i personally don't know a conversion kit.
You nee, as you wrote, backplate left and right, brake-shoes, 2 springs for 8" setup each side and 8" Drums.
The brake cylinders are the same as the 7" setup.
Sometimes you can get a good used set on some selling platforms

Charles Ware's upgraded mine to 8 inch for not much money. If you want to DIY I guess they will have all the required bits.

Anyone who has converted 8" to discs will likely have parts lying around.

although not essential, because the 7'' cam adjusters will work, the 8"" system had slightly larger cams and better to use them if you can find them. When the shoes wear down (Many years from now of course) it just gives you more adjustment.

Which can be compensated by putting a shim under the tail of each shoe. This is actually slightly better since it keeps the shoe more correctly aligned to the curve of the drum.
