Slightly off topic perhaps, but relevant I think. I've just moved house, and the garage is in a State.

How do you organise your garage? What hints & tips do you have?

Pics would be appreciated as well

We moved 2 yrs ago. Extended the garage. Racked it out with Clarke shelving ( very good for the price). It's still a complete tip because I am untidy by nature. Something dodgy in the genes. You are either tidy or not!

I got three bays of shelving from Big Doug's and set them up at the back of the garage for the small to medium sized spares. Not the most substantial shelves in the world but plenty strong enough for what I need, hasn't cured me of my urge to fill every available space with junk and leave stuff everywhere though - why can I never find anything

However much space / shelving you have it will never be enough

And with a Minor, two Commers and a Mini you tend to collect lots of stuff

Work out how much space the car needs (including opening the door), the rest is then storage. We can all learn from ship practice, they don't waste an inch of space. Remember the roof space if there is a pitched roof, this is ideal for items which are bulky but not too heavy such as spare panels. Just don't put too much weight on the timbers.

I have an idea which has been bugging me for some time. My garage is 22 feet long and a mog is of course 12 feet long so it's not quite long enough for two. Seeing how they pack cars on transporters I had the idea of having the back of the first car jacked up so two can overlap in the available space. Obviously this would only be suitable for a car in long term storage. I think the first car would need to be raised three feet or so for clearance and well supported. Feasible or daft, what do you think?

Unfortunately my neighbours are rather fond of their garden

Before doing anything, whitewash the walls and ceiling, you will be surprised how much difference it makes to the light

but theres nothing strewn on the floor how can you work in such a clean place

I have shelves and to store spares and drawers to store tools and when I do tidy the garage out to have a tidy up I can never find anything that's why I don't tidy it out very often.

Keep doing lots of tidying. Trouble is my brain can only remember where things were 3 tidying ups ago.

Clever storage is the answer, I can reccomend Tufferman shelves although I think they are the generic knock together shelving units, when you start putting them together you think they are going to be rubbish flopping all over the place, once they are together, and then the bays bolted together, andthen fixed to the wall they are really good. Amazed at how much 4 bays can soak up.

I have just done mine over the summer, building 12' onto the 20' already there so I now have a home for the minor and the workshop / storage. I also threw lots away in the process of refitting and moving.

Some masonry paint over the wall really does throw the light round, and paint the floor if its bare concrete. Paint will also help stop a little bit of damp getting through if its single skin brick as mine is.

I also had a roof light fitted as that saves on a window which gives wall space for hanging, gives three times as much light for the same size window.

You must have tidy DNA. I've got much more space but fill it full of carp/ logs/ boxes etc.
