Folks,
Just a quick question, an unleaded head for a moggie is just basically the orignal head with hardened values.
Am I right or wrong.
Cheers,
George

Yes, and hardened valve seats.

Wrong. Hardened valve seats, not valves. That's why we have to buy them - easy to fit a new valve, but most won't have the specialist equipment to fit the seats!

is there much work involved, there is specialists around over here but would it might be just cheaper to buy one and ship it over.
Can someone let me know exactly the work required.
Cheers,
George

If you don't like the idea of additive (which lets face it few of us do) a stopgap is the "Valvesaver" which adds additive constantly to the valves. It works on the vacuum in the inlet manifold to "suck" the additive out of a bottle and feed it in.

Hello George,
it is a straight forward machining job for any engine re-conditioner, so you should be able to get it done locally. However, unless you head is badly worn, there is no need to have it modified. You may get many miles just using unleaded petrol without an additive. If you find the valve clearances are closing up but the car is running fine keep on going. You may like to find a second hand head when that happens and have that modified and keep as a spare until the time the original head gets too bad.

I don't see the problem with using additive..... Just a quick splash of additive when you fuel up and that's that.
You have to do a heck of a lot of miles before you break even for the cost of an unleaded head....

you could always do what I did and fit an uleaded metro head. Mine was a 1275, so I did a bit of work but the 1000 mini of metro from 1988 or so onwards were unleaded.
