The free length off a valve spring will be dependent upon the valve springs used.
The free length of a new and unused standard valve spring (Pt No: AEA 311) used on a 1098cc 'A' Series engine is 1.75" (44.45mm).
What ever valve springs you use you must check that the valve springs do not suffer from spring crush when the valve is fully open.
Spring crush is where the valve spring coils come into contact with the coil above and/or below. Spring crush can damage the valve train so it is important to check valve spring coil clearance.
