Newbie advice!

Post by steaky »

HI all. i have a small budget of £800, would love to buy a minor. Would that buy a 'running version'? Have no mechanical knowledge whatsoever but would love to spend time nursing one back to top health, is a minor suitable for a beginner, would farm out the tough jobs etc. Is there such a service where once bought i could get the car checked out and a list of jobs made out such as urgent, major, minor, soon, etc prices etc. Ideally would like a car with m.o.t. that could travel 50/60 miles a week as i work on her. Is it possible? Do you recommend a manual? Is the owners club book any good? Lots of questions I know, i'm just about to recieve a motorbike insurance payout and want to realise my dream of owning one. Thanks in advance.

Agreed, you should get on for the money that would suit. Your best bet is to go along to the local MMOC meeting, I'll bet you meet someone who'd be happy to come and look the car over with you, and help with prioritising a list of jobs - though the obvious list applies (brakes, steering, suspension and whether anything's about to fall off or break - in short, sort out anything that could be a danger to you or others before worrying about cosmetics and engine). Like SR says, let us know where you are - you may well run into someone here who'll help you out.

Hi all again, well I live in Banstead, Surrey. Missus has spotted a minor parked in a nearby road and has mentioned seeing 3/4 parked outside one day, sounds like a club meet possibly. So tomorrow i'll put a letter through his door introducing myself, you never know. thanks, i am encouraged to know that its possible on my budget.

Excellent - even if it's not the club, sounds like a great source of help, and hopefully friendship (probably - Minor ownership has that effect on people...)
