Repairing small holes in roof guttering

Hi All,

So I picked up our restored traveller (Henry) from Charles Ware in Bristol this weekend. I'm absolutely delighted - the car runs like a dream and is a pleasure to drive. Also I couldn't go on more about how great Andy and the guys at Charles Ware throughout the whole process - absolute gents and a pleasure to deal with.

In any case, the restoration primarily focussed on the underside, mechanical and fixing the very rotten wood leaving some bit of bodywork that need resolved long term.

What i'm most concerned about is some rusting & holes on the guttering and was wondering if anyone has tips on the best way to sand back and repair the rusted areas and using the touch up paint i've found online? I realise this would be a stop gap until the work was done properly, but keen to ensure the problem doesn't get too out of hand!

Thanks!

The roof guttering is ally so doesn't really "rust".
Can you post a pic so we know what you mean exactly please?

The front door gutters rust and can be renewed.

Pretty small problem though,in the great scheme of things. You'll now have a car that's well sorted structurally, and I agree Andy and co are excellent,if a little pricey! I'd be inclined to get rid of all the grot, treat what's left of the metal and do a temporary repair/ filler job until funds allow.

Thanks all!

Don't think (hope!) it's as bad as yours qwerty, but have attached some photos. As you can see, my car isn't garaged, which is why i'm hoping to sort asap![frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

A Traveller really does need to be kept in a garage - or at least a shelter of some sort. Or the timber won't last long at all

cant garage unfortunately bmecosse as it's in central london - i'd have to buy/rent a garage nearby which i imagine would cost a small fortune!

My traveller had to stand outside for a couple of autumn months while I was extending the garage and the wood started to show small black marks very quickly. A type of mould I believe.
If the car must be kept outside I don't think that the usual Wares finish of Danish oil will last very long. You may want to consider varnishing the wood when it's bone dry.

charles ware have 3 flood coats of cuprinol then plenty of danish oil on top, so hopefully the wood should stay ok. that being said, if i do see any spots its getting a good sanding and some additional fungal destroyer and varnish on top.

in terms of the guttering - any tips?

Don't use varnish! It just traps the moisture....
