Does any one know if the cotterpin bolt for the distributor is the same as a bicycle cotterpin bolt as I sheared the one on my sidevalve. If not can I get a replacement or do I have to weld thread back on and recut thread

No, a cycle cotter bolt is tapered, a dist. bolt is curved the same profile as the dist. hole.
Get some made and use a larger threaded section 5/16 UNF thread (9/16 A/F nut) . The nut can be done/undone with 9/16 socket or ring spanner. It works for me. :) Sell the extras to cover your costs

I am investigating the production of a small batch of cotter pins which clamp the distributor on the USHM3 engine. They will be produced from 3/8 Unf bolts which means that the threaded section will be 3/8 Unf and the nut will be 9/16 A/F which will the overcome the occassional problem of the thread stripping or breaking.
I have been using a modified cotter pin for many years without any problems and a 9/16 A/F ring spanner is a good fit for tightening or slackening the bolt.
If anyone is interested let me know so that I can estimate the quantity required

I now have a few distributor cotterpin bolts for the USHM3 engine. They are zinc plated high tensile steel with 3/8 UNF thread, 9/16 A/F nut and spring washer
