Engine overhaul?

Hi Guys,
I have a question to the experts here;
my 1098 cc engine consumes a lot of oil (2.5 liters / 1000km) and smokes well blue smoke.

I do not know the history of the engine and its parts. Does it make sense to make a complete overhaul (which I can not do) in a specialist company or is it cheaper to look for a good motor which has been completely overhauled?
I have no idea

and need your experience.
Thanks and nice sunday
Dirk

Others have collected a 'half engine' from Bull Motif I think - and transferred all the parts over.

You would get a good second hand engine for less money than paying to recondition yours, BUT you would have no idea how good that engine was until after you had installed. Even if it was truly good, what was its history, and how long will it last? You would have to be exceptionally lucky to buy a second hand engine that had been only recently reconditioned. If you are going to spend the money, then I would suggest just getting the work done and getting the the warranty and peace of mind. There must be en engineering company near you that can do the work. Otherwise, if shipping from the UK is an option, I recommend KAR engines. You normally exchange your engine and get a different one, but you can have the work done specifically on yours if you wish to keep it for originality.

Thanks for your answers - originality is not the point, it is not the original 803 cc engine which was installed at the factory 60 years ago. It's the engine of a late Minor with 1098 ccm ...
