As the subject states does anyone have a preference i.e NGK or Champion?

ALWAYS Champions.

Agreed. Always Champion. N9Y is a good standard for most 1098cc engines (or RN9Y or even RN9YC).

I seem to have 9nyc written down on my note pad ?

Basic good old N9Y with various 'extras' added over the years. beware of R plugs (of any make) if you have Resistor cables - can end up with too mush Resistance.....

I'd agree but seems there have been some dodgy Champion plugs around lately...I had one such! Maybe a bad batch?

Since fitting the 1380 engine 50,000+ miles and 17 years ago I have used NGK plugs, and never had any problem with them at all.

For a standard engine use BP6ES, again avoid anything with an 'R' in the reference!

When setting up the engine initially, I contacted Aldon about their 'Ignitor' electronic module and they recommended NGK. I started with BP7ES and now run BP8ES as the engine spec has progressed. They just work!

I occasionally had problems with Champion plugs and a racing mechanic said to me I should try NGK plugs and I'll never have any trouble. That was probably 30years ago and I've used nothing else since. Never ever had a faulty one. As Richard says, BP6ES.

Up to about 30 years ago I used Champion but after a lot of problems with them I tried Bosch. They were also garbage and a friend in the aoto repair game suggested trying NGK. Since then that is all I have used without a sign of a problem, including the BU8H NGK plugs used in my Minor.

I actually run my engine on N6Y plugs - but if it hasn't been started for a while it sometimes starts up 'on 3' (N6Y are quite hard) but clears quickly enough on a fast idle. Otherwise no problems ! BMC Works always used Champions - so good enough for me. I also have a very good family reason to avoid anything even vaguely Jap.....

Champion N6Y have an equivalent heat range to NGK BP8ES.

Each to their own, but I have seen a number of engines which are rough with NGK. Swap to Champion and they're as sweet as anything.

Well Mr Budgie, I'd have thought that any well known make of the right heat rating would be good enough. Over the last couple of decades I've used NGK (I've forgotten why) without trouble, now running with the BP6ES type. Some might think that grade's a bit cool running (what was once called a "hard" plug as opposed to a "soft" plug i.e. one that might be more suitable for an oily engine) for a 1098 Mog but I'm of the school that prefers to use as cool (or hard!) a plug as you can that gives no trouble.

Champion N5 for me

Champion N5 were original fitment until mid 60s when it changed to N9Y. These are no longer available except sometimes at autojumbles and were replaced by N5C and N9YC. Some people swear by Champions but others insist on using NGK or other makes. I usually use N5s but am currently trying out NGK BP6ET which is a triple electrode version of the BP6ES / N9YC equivalent. Apparently these do not need adjusting and give a better spark.
I believe current Champion plugs are made somewhere in South America.
We have a few boxes of N9YC available at £15 a box plus other makes from £10 a box.
