Clutch problems with 5 speed kit.

Ok got myself a Ford 5 speed kit and am in the process of fitting it to the back of my Midget 1275 engined minor.
I now find the main shaft of the gearbox is too big to go through the hole in the slip ring of the clutch basket, so I ground through it reasoning I could convert it to a roller release bearing bearing direct on the fingers. but when I bolted up the clutch the fingers have gone virtually 'flat' and it looks as if any movement via the release bearing will push the fingers (diapragm clutch) into the driven plate.
Anybody alse had problems with this 'bolt in' kit and the clutch?
Even if I ran a standard moggy clutch I think the release bearing wouldnt have gone over the mainshaft.

A picture(s) of the problem would be appreciated.
The fingers will go reasonably flat when bolted up.
This is the clutch cover I used with a Midget flywheel converted to 7.5" and used with the Ford gearbox.[frame]Image[/frame]

[frame]Image[/frame][frame]the slip ring I ground off!Image[/frame] submitted from my phone but you can see how close the fingers will be to the clutch plate

I have just dry assembled the MG Midget flywheel / centre plate and the pressure plate (all used with the Ford gearbox); and the distance from the boss of the centre plate to the rubbing pad (triangular plate) of the pressure plate is 28.5mm. The distance from the fingers to the centre plate is 23.3mm.
Even without the rubbing pad the fingers are nowhere near the centre plate.
The hole through the rubbing plate (triangular plate) is 37mm internal diameter.
The distance between the fingers with the pressure plate free from the flywheel is 45.5mm.
So to sum up something is basically wrong!!!
Possibly the wrong clutch assy.
What clutch are you using?

Standard 1275 midget clutch as far as I know. It's been on for a while behind the standard moggy box. The only thing I have changed is to fit the Ford/Mg hybrid driven plate but everything seems to be too small diameter to clear the Ford main shaft. I'm thinking of grinding a little off each clutch finger.

Using the MG Midget clutch pressure plate is the source of your problem.
You do need to use the appropriate clutch pressure plate when fitting/using the Ford gearbox.
