Hi. I've always had a leak from the rear end of the engine. I'm thinking the crankshaft rear oil seal ?? Is this a major fix or can be done without lifting the engine out ( winter job )

Try nipping up the sump bolts, but not too much - just enough to gently compress the cork sealing strip at the rear. :D

If it's the rear of the crankshaft - oil appearing from the jiggle pin at the base of the gearbox - then this is caused by pressure in the crankcase. Clear the breathers and make sure one of them is connected to the inlet system to suck away the fumes.... It's all been covered many times... If the oil is running down the back of the sump then new sump gaskets (and please NO bodger paste..) will cure it.

Sounds easier than I thought. Will check the sump bolts and breather but if it requires new gasket can the sump be removed in place

Yes! Putting the sump back on is one of those jobs where you wish you had
extra hands though!
