Hello,

My Series II Minor has wheels with adjustment holes in them, but the grommets are long gone. Is it important to have the grommets and, if so, are they obtainable?

My experience suggests don't bother, in fact when I purchased some a couple of years ago they didn't fit. Save your money.

Hi Pete, no not important and I doubt if theres any but the concourse cars that still have them! My Dad used to put a bit of masking tape over the holes but Ive never felt it was necessary. There was a blanking plug also fitted to the back drums of later minors and Ive only ever saw one of those!

I thought Id have a quick look on ESMs site and they have them listed!

I've yet to delv into the world of brakes yet...

I tried to adjust them the other day, but it felt as if the adjustment screws were seized.

Any tips on brake-shoe adjustment?

David those are the ones that didn't fit.
Mark take the drums off and investigate, might be difficult if you cant turn the adjuster back to enable the drums to clear the shoes but its possible if you alternatively leaver one side then the other.

Thanks for your replies, folks. David, those listed on ESM are for the rear brake drums, rather than the road wheels so, SUE 482, that may be why they don't fit the wheel holes.

There is probably some rubber blanking plug made somewhere that fits, if it could be identified, but I shan't lose any sleep over it!

Sorry are we at cross purposes here, they don't fit the brake drums.

I did not know that there were meant to be dust caps for the drums, neither of my Minors have them, the hub caps keep the dirt out. I have a rubber grommet in one of the brake adjuster holes in a Series MM wheel.

Mark, if you have never adjusted the brakes it is important that you support the car on axle stands, remove each brake drum at a time and with an assistant press the brake pedal gently and make sure that both pistons on the front wheels and one on each back wheel are working correctly. Also check the condition of the shoes. Paint the heads of the adjuster screws, it makes them easier to see, then replace the drums

Yes, and the holes on the wheels were carried on into the Series II vehicles, judging by my car.

And you need a good big wide-blade screwdriver.

When I have my brake drum off I always put some tipex on the brake adjuster to make it easier to see through the hole the next time

A wide blade screwdriver will not fit through the adjuster holes of a Series MM/early Series II drum
