Morning all,

69' 2 door saloon.

Popped the doors off to repair the bottoms, the usual tin worm!

While the hinges are off, I want to tidy them up and get them working great, they're a bit stiff.

Ok, questions!

How do I know if the hinge pins need replacing, original size or oversized?

What's the best way to clean em up, I'm thinking a petrol soak then a dip in nitro mors, they're thick with respray paint.

They were fun to get off....in the end a blob of weld and a turn of a mole grip did it!

Try the nitro -or just use a blow torch to strip the multi layers. Once clean you will be able to feel any wear in the pin/hinge body. Knock the pins out and inspect them !

Caustic soda works well, but follow the instructions because it's really nasty stuff.

What do you paint it in after for a primer? I don't want to gunk it up and make it stiff again, zinc primer?

Hi guys,

To feel for wear in the hinge pin, if I'm holding the hinge open in my hand and it has some play in it like a little rock side to side does that mean the pin has worn? Not every hinge does it some have no play at all when in the hand and open.


Would the fix for said play getting the oversize drill bit and hinge pin and replacing the worn one with it?

Just placing an order for door bolts so wondering wether to add hinge pins to the list!

Any play equals wear. The oversize pins are made to restore the hinges.

Smashing, so that's a yes.

As for drilling the new hole, what's the best approach for that?

Use a pillar stand for the drill ?

So use a pillar stand and clamp the hinge underneath? Both sides of the hinge together or one at a time?


Also, in getting the hinge pin out, do I hit it out from the flat side of the pin or the raised bit?

One end of the pin has splines, so will only come out one way, you'll just have to use your own judgement as to what end to knock them out from, by looking to see if you can see evidence of splines on the end that sticks out.

Now I'm assuming hit it from picture A, but I've never done this and rather than waste time doing it wrong and then asking, I thought I'd ask first. It may seem silly to some but I've got to learn somehow!

As mentioned you need to scrape away the paint and look for signs of the splines but going from picture only I would knock it from the end that is sticking out. No guarantees though!

Can't find any splines. I'll give it a go next time I'm here.

Had a look at the replacement pin on line and worked out which way to hit from. Trying it soon!
