Small fuel leak where fuel pipe goes into tank

Post by mattinhertford »

Hi all,

So a few weeks back i removed the tank entirely to do some welding in the boot. Then only tonight have I actually filled it almost full with fuel and i had a fairly fast drip (drip every 3 seconds) coming from where the fuel pipe fixing (the pipe to the pump at the front).

Obviously this is the first time I've had enough fuel in the tank to be above that point where the pipe goes in. I tried a quick tightening up of the nut but it was pretty tight already and that made no difference. It was getting dark so I quickly drained enough from the tank to bring it below the point wher the pipe goes in.

The nut has been rounded a couple of times (previous owner :-? ) so I've only got a couple of goes to get it right before the nut is done for, then I assume i need a whole new pipe since its flared at the end isn't it, so I can't just put a new nut on there :(

So, looking at the pic below, should I be pulling the pipe out gently while I do the nut up....to bring the flare against the end to make a snug fit?.....or pushing it in slightly to make a snug fit? Does that make sense?

Thanks

It makes no difference whether you push or pull the pipe/union it is doing up the nut (item No: 39 ) that matters.
Try a bit of wire wool rubbed on the end of the union (item No: 40) to clean it up making sure that none gets into the pipe.
