Hello,

First post since the purchase of our first morris !
Been running fine for a few months but today I noticed a crack in what I think is the fuel line filter ?
So my question is, can I replace the piece shown in the photo with this

I think that looks right but my knowledge is basically limited to what I've read here and twenty minutes on Google !

Any advice appreciated

The best thing to do with that filter is to remove it and fit the pipe directly to the pump. An inline filter isn't necessary and can be the cause of all sorts of problems.

I fear what you are suggesting is way beyond my technical ability, which was stretched at the thought of replacing that filter !

I'll have a look tomorrow at what you're suggesting and see if it looks like something I could theoretically tackle.

They are available from any local car shop if you want to replace it, I would replace the hose as well as it looks like its starting to perish at the ends. Be wary of the braided hoses and just buy modern petrol pipe as the braided ones seem to leak very quickly.

There should be a filter in the fuel pump. Make sure you buy good quality hose which will withstand the ethanol in the petrol.

They can be a source of fuel vaporisation causing the fuel to stop flowing if you are stuck in traffic and things get hot (happened to me ) and more joints to leak. They really aren't needed as there's a built in filter in the pump itself. As suggested it probably would be better to fit a new length of fuel line from the pump to the carb to replace the old pieces and the filter. If you can use a screwdriver then it's an easy job

If unsure which type of pipe to buy just take the old one to the place you were going to buy a new filter from.They'll sell you a length of the correct stuff,buy a couple of hose clips at the same time.

One last question - what dimension fuel line will I need ? Its probably going to be quicker for me to order it online thats all.

1/4 inch bore will be fine. Try to get smooth edged clips to secure it, standard jubilee clips can cut into the hose. Make sure that you get proper petrol hose, not just clear plastic.

When I bought my Morris mine kept packing because of a filter like that and I replaced it and still kept packing then I got rid of the filter all together and that was four years ago and it has been alright ever since . If you can use a screwdriver to undo the clips and then do them back up on a new bit of hose it takes no time.

I did it !

It's running like a charm again too .

The best and most rewarding way of looking after a minor is do it yourself, and the old saying goes if you want a job doing properly do it yourself.

We have all learnt, made mistakes, learnt from them hopefully and participate in a great forum where there is plenty of advice.

Just wanted to say I've really noticed a difference in how smoothly he's now running at lower speeds with the choke in. I don't know if this is due to the removal of the filter or just my excellent skills in screw tightening, either way I'm glad I did it .

So heres another thing, the old chap I bought my morris from instructed me to add in a cup of engine oil to the petrol every other time I filled up the tank. I have done so, because as youve seen I am eager to follow advice. Should I continue doing this ? Is it good practice ?

No shouldnt be necessary to add oil to the petrol. Do you use a lead replacemnet or has it had a unleaded head fitted?
