hi all

preparing for my new mogies first service (under my ownership) I have been consulting the veriouse owner and workshop manuals I have they all quote "standerd" oils 20w ect . in the past I have always used multi grade oils in my cars eg 20w-50 is this just becouse they dident exist in the 50's or are they beter for the mogie. Could you give me an idea of the oils you all use in you mogies ie engine gearbox dampers. thanks

Engine+gearbox good 20w50, diff Hypoid EP 80/90 don't know about the dampers though

Pretty much any good quality 20W/50 or 15W/40 is fine for the engine and gearbox. I use Castrol GTX 15W/40 personally.

Don't go for VERY cheap oil £3-£4 as it is usually recycled and does not do much protection!

Damper oil is available from Moggy specialists but you rarely need it. If the dampers loose oil then it's a good sign that they need reconditioning.

yes - as soon as multigrades became available they were recommended instead of the monogrades (as they work better)

I worked on a car 2 weeks ago which had stiff + squeaky steering. I took the grommet off the floor and found that I couldn't evem see the nipple! I would guess that for that level of grime to build up, the rack had never been oiled since it was made in 69.
I put a lot more than the recommended amount of oil in it to make up for 30 years missing services (not sure if that was a good idea) and since then the steering has been fine.

thanks for all the replies I am actualy a electronic technician I can do basic services but as far as grades of oil ect I normaly just folow the manual so thanks for the updates I live in south africa so no local morris specialists I will see where the local guyes get there stuff but the next club meeting is still 2 weeks away. Trust me to buy my morris the day after the meet and have to wait a whole month for the next one again thanks for all the help and speedy replys

Hello Briank, nice to hear from someone in South Africa - I believe you are our first? Would you mind updating your profile to show your location so we don't keep assuming you need to know the price of U.K oil etc!

In addition to the steering rack nipple which needs oiling, did you know that there are 9 grease nipples to deal with at each 3,000 mile service?

I agree with Ray, Multigrades are far better than monogrades. Modern oils and petrol benefit a minor with less wear & tear, less deposits & better fuel economy. 20w/50 will be fine for your Minor's engine and gearbox.

SAE20 motor cycle fork oil or hydraulic jack oil should be fine for your dampers.
Castrol introduced multigrade oil to the public to coincide with the launch of the E Type Jaguar.

They also sell the SU light dashpot oil. Fab stuff. I ran out years ago and bought some Penrite dashpot oil and it's WAY too thick!

Worth getting some in with the order then as it's good stuff (and correct for the carb).

But isn't briank in S. Africa? Better to get what's available there than have the same stuff sent from the Uk. I'd bet the "damper oil" is just jack or fork oil in a different container?!

But I think Burlens supply worldwide as they own the SU rights so there should be a local supplier.
