Steering Boxes (Morris Cowley)

I'm hoping someone out there can help...

I recently bought a flatnose Morris Cowley :D Its fairly uptogether but does need a few bits and pieces and some TLC

Image

On these, the steering box is bolted to the engine block and isolated with a rubber bush. The bush is absolutely shot and allows a lot of play in the steering. I have taken the complete box and column off, and tried to get the bush out. There is a brass "plug" about 3" diameter with a large hex in the center (which a previous owner has filed down to a flat). There (was) also a little brass "nipple" about 3mm diameter sticking up from this plug, which has been sheared off. In order to get at the bush I need to get this brass bit off. I have clamped the flats in the vise and used the column itself as the lever to get it undone, but its just not unscrewing. In case the "nipple" was a locking pin, I have drilled it out as deep as I dare and there is still no movement...

Has anyone got any ideas, or knows the steering boxes well on these cars?

Thanks

If no-one comes up with the info you require, try contacting The Cooke Group at Leicester who are probably going to be on your contact list anyway - restorers, parts etc. West Ave, Wigston, Leicester LE18 2FB, 0116 288 1234, cookejohn@hotmail.com and a reputation for being helpful. I have no connection to them but know an owner who used them lots (he's sold his now).

Thanks for that, as a new owner I didn't know about them :)
