I was at beaulieu today, went to go home and on selecting 2nd gear it made a horrible noise but did engage . I got it into 3rd and 4th .
I managed to get home on the back roads, what's likely to have failed?

The bearings and the special washer between shafts. Read the 'gearbox overhaul' ...you need it urgently....
