I was hoping to fit a temperature gauge to my Morris to make life easier so she doesn't get to hot but I'm not sure where to start or if it's a job a really,really novice mechanic can do. Any help would be great and what parts I need and where to get them would be even better.

What size engine do you have in the car? If it's a 1098 then it is relatively straightforward but if it's a 948 then it can be done but it's a little more involved.

well I know many fit temp gauges,and each to their own,but a well maintained system will actually overcool the minor,you could even take the fan off and as long as you are moving, the temp will stay down,only going up in traffic,but if you feel the need for something to watch, then relatively easy on most models .I certainly wouldn't bother.

It's a 1098 engine,my wife uses the car as a daily driver around town so she would more than likely would be sat in traffic and sometimes rush hour. Is there any info knocking around on how to fit one and what I would need to do the job??

Lol can't hurt having a temp guage though can it... IS the oil pressure guage a good idea as well??

If you get one of those combined oil pressure/water temperature gauges that was fitted to contemporary MGBs and Midgets etc it will be easy to fit, reliable and only take up the space of one gauge
The temperature gauge sender will screw straight onto the the 1098 cylinder head where the blanking plug is fitted.

You don't "need" one of course but it might give you some peace of mind. I fitted one to our Minor before a holiday in France in hot weather, fully laden, for exactly that reason. The car never ran hot, as Minors hardly ever do, and I'd taken the precaution of replacing the water pump, radiator etc before we set off but I still found it helpful.

This is how I fitted mine, you can see the oil T piece with the oil switch by the side of the distributor bracket.

One day my engine will look like that!! That gauge is exactly the one I want as it fits nicely instead of having two. Did the gauge come with everything you need or did you need to get other items,I know that might seem obvious to most but saves me guessing and waiting longer for more parts to arrive..

Yes besides the gauge you will need ACC203 and ACC206 from ESM. Dont forget the lighting

The link to the Mini sport website shows a capillary connection on the dual water/oil gauge, for the 1098 engine dont you need an electrical gauge with a sender unit?

A capillary one will fit fine but, depending on which gauge you get, you may need a screwed adaptor to fit it in the block. Best to make sure the supplier knows what engine to spec the fitting for.

The gauge I have suggested and the parts from ESM will fit and work fine.

The reason I raised the question was because I was under the impression the "normal" method of fitting a temp gauge to a 1098 engine was a electrical sender unit. I did not know a capillary gauge would also fit. I was merely asking to clarify for the OP.

There is no 'normal way' since the 1098 never had a temp gauge....
