Morris Minor Owners Club

Hello,
I've had my Minor (2dr Saloon, Traf. Blue, 1965) since August and haven't had much time to do anything to it. It's currently at 103k miles and the previous owner managed to do a staggering 200 miles over the last 10 years! I use a motorcycle as my primary mode of transport, and now I've passed my Driving Practical I'm considering signing up and heading up to the national rally. It just passed the MOT with minimal rust developing on the boot floor, and my father and I have done about 500 miles or so since August.

I haven't driven it yet - we're going to be calling FJ for insurance soon. I'll be getting myself familiar with car in the next week or so. It's original apart from a Setero/Radio the previous owner added in 1996. I've got plenty of patience considering I've been on L-Plates on motorcycles for two years, restricted from motorways.

They journey would be about 224 miles, give or take a few. What would you suggest I do to the car before the journey? Are there any spare parts I should take with me? Also, any tips on driving 'styles' on such a long journey? (frequent stops, stick to A/B roads etc.)

Welcome! My advice would be to Get plenty of miles in over the next few weeks. That will bring out any faults and give you more confidence in your car. If the tyres haven't been changed in the last 10 years don't go too quickly (50 max?). If the brake fluid hasn't been changed it would be worth bleeding fresh fluid through. Similarly for oil and water. If your fuel pump and distributor are ok you should be fine. Would be worth contacting your local group as you may well be able to travel along with them?

Would completely agree with the above but add a 2litre bottle of water (radiator top up) there's never a tap when you need one! Check state of spare tyre - make sure you pack hub cap remover (- just in case you get a flat).

Personally I'd plot my route using the A roads just in case you need to stop/rest your legs as it's probably the first time you've driven so far in a Minor and you will find you need to concentrate more on your driving rather more than you do with a modern car - hence the need to take more breaks.

Thanks both for the advice! We've just changed ordered a full set of tyres as they're all pretty worn remoulds. I will certainly be packing in the miles as soon as insurance is sorted out.

where are you driving from you might be able to hook with someone else on the way which makes driving so much nicer

just put a few miles on the car to see how it performs , take some water maybee some oil , they are cars that need use
