Mystery component

Hi

Can anyone identify this component for me please? it is mounted in the engine bay, on the front inner wing to the left side of the engine. It doesn't seem to be connected to anything at the moment, thought there is what appears to be an outlet for a hose or pipe underneath. There are no electrical connections. There is also a hole in the tail-end, though I have no idea whether anything is supposed to go in or out of that.

I have of course scoured the workshop manual and there is nothing in there to suggest what it might be (Well, its a Hayne's manual after all).

If it is of any relevance, the engine is a 1275cc unit from a Morris Marina.

The mystery object is a brake servo; and from your description out of use.
They were not fitted as original equipment on a Minor but could be as an after market addition.

Just get rid of it ... It's probably knackered...and a small car like a Minor doesn't need a servo!

If you want a servo, then they are available from several of the normal Minor parts suppliers. Be aware that they do not make the brakes better, but they do reduce the effort needed to apply the brakes. Usually only fitted if the car has had discs fitted. Looking at the photo, I would suggest replacing the servo rather than trying to make that one function (if you want one at all).

My son took it out today and stripped it down. It was full of foul-smelling sticky black gunk and the remains of a diaphragm. He's still trying to get the smell off now, five hours later. It's like he's been 'skunked'!
