Gearbox anti rattle spring / plunger

Hi,
I have just replaced this, as at speed I get an annoying rattle from my gear stick (I put my hand on it and it stops).
However the new replacement doesn't look any different in terms of spring or plunger length / condition to the original, so I am left wondering whether changing them will have made any difference at all.
Therefore I was hoping that someone else out there has experienced this and effected a cure? Or have you just replaced like for like and it has cured it?
I am pondering whether putting a small ball bearing behind the spring, thus pushing the whole thing forward a bit might improve things.
The image I've found of these for you below also features a small plastic cap, am I missing this? I didn't spot it on the diagram in my workshop manual....

Yes - you need the plastic cup. Mini owners help the problem by sliding a rubber tube down the gear lever.

Moss show it, part no 131, it comprises of 5 items not the 3 you show.

I only count four parts: 34, 35, 36 & 37 -- or am I missing something??
The plug and washer, which I already have the perfectly serviceable originals fitted, plus the spring and plunger, which I purchased replacements for. I also acquired a new rubber 'O' ring for the groove at the base of the gear stick, if you mean that?
But that is a separate item from the anti rattle....

Mike, If you look at the callout on the R/H side of the page underneath the gasket set it shows 5 items.

What about spring Pt No 2A3390 (MOSS) which is the 5th part of item No 131 Pt No: SGB0002 Anti-Rattle Kit and which fits under the plastic cup Pt No: 2A3467.
Sometimes the gear lever retaining plate Pt No: 2A3339 (MOSS) can be so worn as to make fitting the anti-rattle kit pointless so the plate has to be replaced.

I have now sourced a solution thanks to your pointers from my spares stash.
Being a hoarder, in regard to the 'bits that might come in useful one day' category, I keep a stash of old cups and plugs that come from various parts I have bought or acquired along the way. The rubber plug in question is marked (though my photos don't show this) 7/16, though I'm not entirely sure why or what it came off now, anyway it fits over the end of the anti-rattle plunger and mygear stick has lost its wobble, therefore feeling more precise and less of a pudding stirrer! 
I also include a photo of my method of attaching the gear stick rubber gaiter / retaining rim, I fix it to the carpet, instead of screwing it into the metal tunnel, as it was originally fixed (though when in place it looks no different).
This make little jobs like this a breeze, as I simply unscrew the gear knob and lift carpet and gaiter out of the way. Simples!!

After all the engine work and gear stick rattle problems, I thought I'd take it easy and tackle the simple job of going round greasing my nipples................. (ooooh errr missus!!)
Well, in penance for my resolution of the gearstick rattle what did I find? Yep, excessive play on the drivers side wheel, not resolvable by tightening up the castleated nut for the bearings, so I decided to tackle a job that, to be honest, I'd been putting off for a while and took the hub apart, oh, joy, crushed bearings................ 
Just as well I decided to bite the bullet and investigate before another long journey in her.................. 
I also changed the pads for a nearly new set I'd saved when I renewed the calipers, which looking back through my receipts was May 2010!!
Five years! I'm impressed!
Plus I reckon, going by that rate of wear, there was at least another two years worth of pad left, I have only changed them now because the pads themselves are staring to separate from their backing plates.

What I'm still kicking myself for is leaving behind two perfectly good kingpins (with stub axles and steering arms attached) in Milton Keynes when I moved to Mansfield!
I forgot them because they were stored separate from the rest of my spares and by the time I remembered them my former landlord had thrown them out, thinking I didn't want them................ 
I'll find a replacement pair for the right price one day.....................

Ahhh, I see, item 131 the anti rattle kit, they include in this the button and spring that the gear stick presses into, visible in my second picture looking down into the hole where the gear stick goes.
Presumably if I wanted to change these I could just fish the old ones out with my long handled pliers?
