Hi can anyone help me I'm new to all this but I have a 1954 series 2 and the heater works but noisy and there is no heat coming out , I was told the car was standing unused in a car museum for 8 years so I'm wondering if I should take the heater out and dismantle to clean it and put new hose on, but I'm not sure how to do it , is it a hard fiddly job to do[frame][/frame]

Have you opened the 'tap' in the engine bay? Mine is noisy too but it gets swamped by louder noises above 30mph!

Yes but there isn't no heat coming through the hose at all

Take the hoses off in the engine bay -and flush through with a garden hose... Go gently - DO NOT block either end of the hoses while hooked up to the garden hose......

Do you mean just flush the hoses through

Yes as it will flush through the heater matrix, take it easy just in case it's blocked as you'll get soaked
With both hoses disconected under the bonnet try one at a time with your hose pipe and obviously you're looking for water flow out of the other to show the heater matrix is clear. Might have been an air lock if all's well with the hose pipe test.

Also check if there is a thermostat fitted to the engine - and if so is it stuck open ?

Ok thanks for that I'll do it sounds easy enough , what about the noise of the fan it was ok when I first tried it but now it's making a noise

Depends on what noise. It might be a dry bearing in the fan motor or the fan blades catching something which I doubt. Either of them would mean removing the heater as far as I'm aware. It might calm down when used. Hard to describe a noise.

It's like the blade is hitting something

Get the heat moving - it may expand away from the fan........

I'm not 100% sure on the heater fan having never stripped one but I assume with the age of the heater it'll have a grub screw maybe to hold the fan to the motor armature ? Maybe this has worked loose and causing the fan to run n wobble slightly?
Really if it doesn't calm down it'll need taking out. For which I assume 2 hoses 1 maybe 2 wires and a few screws/ bolts , but having never removed one I'm not sure, but I'm sure it'll be straightforward enough.

Remove the two screws securing the heater to the bottom of the switch panel and the scew holding it to the parcel shelf. Remove the set screws at either end of the parcel shelf which will give you room to remove the heater.
Check the hoses at the back of the. heater
There should be a Y piece on top of the heater with two hoses connected to the windscreen demister ducts.
The front of the heater is held on by three clips which can be removed to get to the motor
The rotary switch should be off fully anticlockwise and fully on then slowing as the switch is turned clockwise. The switch can be dismantled for cleaning by carefuly turning back the tags

I've had a noisy bearing on a heater making a high pitched 'whirr', very annoying. Also a heater with the fan catching the case, quite distinctive and quite difficult to correct (neither fault on a Minor, though!). Good luck with it, it will be worth it. Love the black and tan, even better than a red interior.

Thanks guys again I'll do that the weekend it was silent when I first used it it's only stated being noisy this week so I'm hoping it not much I'll give it a good clean anyway , thanks

A quick post date. I had the same problem - the heater sounded atrocious and I felt sure the bearings were toast. However it was a simple fix with the heater in place. Lower the parcel shelf and examine the large heater hose on the right of the heater unit. Mine seemed loose so I took the hose off and found the connecting piece - in my case a white piece of plumbing with a lip to stop it coming out of the heater. This was loose and fouling the fan which was quite gouged. It was a bit fiddly but I put in 3 short self tapping screws through the heater body to secure the plastic joining piece in place. Result - near silent fan sounding like a modern!
