Doe s anyone have any pics of the Dashboards of the MM, series II and 1000? Me car seems to be combined at some point I'm afraid

All right then, so I've got the original late series II dash, with a series 3 steeringwheel (which comes with an indicatorstick) My gearstick is different too, due to the 1098 engine and gearbox

Or could someone have just taken the lids off of your glove boxes?

I've got the 'golden' clock, so it should be series 2, I am still working on pictures....

ONNE, if your car has been converted to the 1098 engine and gear-
box then you could still have a 'gold ' faced speedo and still read
your speed correctly!! The first two years of the 1098 cars (1962-64)
kept the gold faced speedo. It would read to 90mph, not the 80mph
of the earlier gold faced speedos.

Right then, mine goes to 90mph, so it should go ok then, but it just isn't right, it says 50 mph when I am doing only 30mph, I measured it with a friend!

I am cleaning it up btw tonight, so keep your fingers crossed....

If needs be, I've got one of those two-year gold faced 1098 speedos that is un-needed to me.

ONNE...re your incorrectly reading speedo, it is probable that you
have a 1098 engine with a 1098 gearbox( ribbed casing) but with
the wrong rear axle ratio. The 1098 ratio should be 4.22-1 whereas
the series 2 ratio was 5.375-1 so,if you still have the series 2 ratio
the 1098 type speedo would think that you were doing a greater
speed than you are actually doing. As a check you should look at
the number visible on the face of the speedo. The only two numbers
for the 1098 bronze faced speedos are: SN4477/80 or SN4477/31.
This would be confirmed if you find that you can easily exceed an
indicated 90mph on your car!!!

now you mention it, that could be the problem, but it should pull up quite quickly shouldn't it, what would the top speed be then? The fast I could is 116 kmh showing on my GPS(which I use as speedo at the moment), Or is it t'other way round? That should explain fuel consumption.....

are discussing the speedo? Your 116Kph equals 72.5 mph which
indicates that my suggestion re the rear axle ratio is not correct.
As a further check, does your FUEL GUAGE read correctly???
I ask because if you have had the 1098 speedo fitted but still
have the series two SENDER UNIT then it should not be working
correctly.

Well, it does go down a bit quick, but I filled her up when the meter was halfway down, and 15 liters (half a tank) could be added, maybe the sender has been changed too

serial number on the face of your speedo??

February 1962 series 3 948cc saloon. So one of the later 948cc cars, the glovebox lids were discontinued for a time in November 1961.
80mph "bronze" speedometer which reads correctly because although there has been a later addition of 1098cc engine + gearbox it's still a 4.55:1 differential.

57.. I think you will find that the diff ratio was 4.22-1 on a '62
1098 car. The 4.55-1 ratio was available but only as an 'option'.
( I know from experience that a 1098 with 4.55 diff gives a nice
effortless acceleration). If ONNE gives his speedos serial number
then all will be revealed.

No Willie, and sorry if my wording was obscure, this is originally a 948 car (Feb. '62) so has the 80mph speedo and 4.55:1 diff. as fitted when built. The diff. is the original according to Heritage Trust records. The 1098cc engine is a later addition to this particular car as I possibly should have added.
But yes you are correct about the 1098 later 1962 cars having the 4.22:1 diff. as standard.

57...ok so we are both correct. If I read ONNEs clues correctly
he has a series 2 car so the diff is/was earlier ratio than yours as was
the speedo. Don't we have fun trying to identify what has been done
to these cars over the years.
