Morris Minor Owners Club

Now that the MG is sold, I'm fulfilling a long-standing promise to my darling wife Lindsay that I'd get us a Morris MInor convertible - and here it is, collecting it next week. An original (rather than converted from a 2 door saloon) convertible from 1968. It has a 1972 plate because it was originally registered on Jersey, not moving back to England until 1972. The 2nd owner bought it then, selling to the chap I'm buying from only 2 years ago. So, only 3 previous owners! Very solid, and impeccably serviced by the current owner who is a time served Leyland mechanic who worked on Minors in his early days there.[frame][/frame]

Indeed, one will just have to follow the yellow glow in the sky to find it in a car park!
Not the original colour, which was, I'm given to understand, Almond green. I think this (or very similar) yellow was used in 61/62, Highway yellow I think it was called? Anyway, this is a very high-viz colour, should be safe on busy lorry-strewn motorways!
By the way, I'm looking for a decent pair of sun visors for it if anyone knows of anyone with some spare? It has none at the moment, and unlike on the midget, the top rail is too high to "hide behind" from a lowish sun!

Take a look here - Highway yellow is towards the bottom and is a much paler yellow.

Yours is nearer the yellow they used on the BT vans? Lovely colour for a Minor

Not sure how the P.O. would carry a ladder on a Convertible? As an aside - were yellow P.O. vans the first example of Hi-Viz in use in the UK ?

Easy to carry a ladder, remove the rear seat back, rest the ladder on top of the windscreen. Simples!

Hello, Dominic's back. That does look dangerously close to BS 356 Golden Yellow which adorned the PO engineers' vans from about January or February 1969 to the end of production. The PO had previously used a darkish green colour and the change was reputedly to stop them being crashed into when they were parked out in the countryside. So they moved from camouflage to hi-viz in one easy move! If you want a sample of the BS356 paint, pm me an adress and I will send you a swatch which might come in handy if it does match up (mind you, computerised matching is pretty damned good these days).

The BMC fireengine was a convertible pickup and that carried ladders! anything is possible if you try hard!

Yes, I agree, it does look close to GPO yellow. I'm collecting the car tomorrow, and there's the paint code included in the large file of documentation. I'll contact you in the next few days if that's ok, then I can report what the colour is.

My dad worked for BT before me, from Demob after his wartime service, when it was still part of the GPO through Buzby and into the mid 1980's. I heard many tales of them being parked up out of sight, because of their dark green colouring, whilst the staff watched the local cricket match!!
I subsequently heard that this was one of the reasons for the change to a nice bright colour......................

Looks good. There used to be a similarly coloured minor on the Black Isle just north of Inverness circa 25 years ago. It was painted Highland Regional Council yellow same as all the trucks, vans and snowploughs.
