Morris Minor Owners Club

Ok nobody laugh !!! Been having a look at pictures of Morris Minor bodyshells and have noticed what appears to be a whopping great hole in the bulkhead directly behind where the battery sits.

What is it for ?

When the bodyshells were being dipped before paint and assembly, a rather large support beam called 'the rotor dip spit', was inserted through there, so as to be able turn the shell while it was being submerged in a rust preventative process tank, possibly to get rid of air locks. This was to make the shell brilliantly corrosion proof!

The process was used on other Morris's too, MO Oxfords for example. (Page 20-21 of Morris Minor - The First Fifty Years.) A Ray Newell book from 1997.

Ah yes the ''rotodip'' hole like the early minis had in the back seat upright and bulkhead. Why didn't I think of that !! cheers.

How would that work on Travellers??? And there's no matching support in the rear bulkhead. Were Minor shells really corrosion dipped ? The evidence suggests otherwise......

It's obviously there so as to be able to fit the big rubber blanking plug! Otherwise there would be millions of blanking grommets with nowhere to fit.

'Roto-dip' is the description in the book that I referred to earlier. There is also a complete explanation of the 500ft long process line used, from removing grease, providing the rust proof coating, then primer paint and oven baking. Two lines were set up, one at Nuffield Metal products in Birmingham for the Minor, and the other for other Nuffield products at Cowley.

There is also a picture of a Morris Oxford with the roto-dip spit coming out of the boot through the spare wheel space below the boot floor.

I'll change it to Roto-dip - I put Rota-dip in the book, duh!

POMMReg is a top man. His work is under-rated, and not properly appreciated by some.

As discussed ages ago, the van had little going for it. Good on you know who, for taking it on though.

it was advertised on the lcv site,mate had organised transport, awaited to learn the location, yet told he was told it had been scrapped....

Few weeks later it was on 1098's drive!

I was saying this 5yrs ago....no-one took any notice....

I like a happy ending-----hope your book has one! --well at least an ending
