Re-wire indicator stalk?

On the search for more help please.
After 50 years, the thin wire in the hollow indicator stalk has broken at the exit, steering wheel end.
Has anyone tried/had any success re-wiring this? If so how?
Also, is the flashing repeater a requirement for the MOT?
Thanks
Pete

Yes you need a repeater - but it doesn't need to be in the stalk. Some use a spare lamp in the speedo - usually the useless orange 'oil filter blocked' warning light.

Thanks.
I'll see if I can get the plastic end off and thread a new wire before I abandon it.

With a bit of a stretch I've managed to solder an extended wire to the end of the internal wire in the indicator stalk.
The circuit is complete but still no repeater flashing.
As my local (all those parts you can't buy any longer) shop was closed I opened up the flasher unit.
Through much trial and error I worked out that the spring was broken and the terminals top and bottom needed to be linked.
I managed to connect both and reassemble the part.
All working fine but flashing rather quickly.
By the time I got the stalk back on and fitted the steering wheel the flasher unit had died again.
My guess is the temerature sensitive bit (the spring, now a bit shorter) is rather more finely balanced than my enthusiastic inputs.
Off to the parts store.

Rather disappointed that the new flasher unit didn't work
A quick reworking of the interior of the original one (again) and I'm back in business
