I ordered some Cuprinol 5 star to mix with Sikkens Cetol HLS as per Steve Foreman’s book but when it arrived it is now water based. Apparently they don’t make a spirit based product any more.

Obviously being water based it wont mix with the Sikkens which is spirit based. Has anyone any suggestions as to what else might do?

Also has anyone tried using this water based formula and what do you think of it performance by comparison?

Just use the 5 Star as it comes. It should still do the job of preserving the timber.

Recently I needed some water repellent to treat some exposed spalling bricks, I had the same problem finding a spirit based product, everything's water based these days but I found that Screwfix still carry a range of spirit based products.

I have just stripped and treated my wood but didn't want the very pale, new wood look. Clear Cuprinol is useful for keeping the colour lighter but I went with 100% Sikkens Cetol HLS in Steve Foreman's recommended colour of F4 30 50T 2 coats wet on wet. I followed up with 3 coats Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 again mixed in the same colour. I am really pleased with the results, it isn't too pale, any dark stains aren't too obvious and a couple of new sections blend in well. The 2 one litre tins were just under £46 delivered from decoratingwarehouse.co.uk and there is loads left over, probably 2/3 litre of each. Both are spirit based.
