Hi guys, ive never actually found this 2 b true but my instincts never fail me... i think im right in thinking when u remove windiws and get them ready 4 replacing but a black murky horrible substance named mastic surrounds the edges its time for cleaning! i used what most people in the kitchen use a brush with thick hard bristles for cleaning the actual windows followed by 2layers of washing up liquid then a big wipe with a cloth with methalated spirit! but doing mastic is a real pain in the """\ i used a knife, using my legs to grip the glass and both hands i scraped the horrible mastic layers off! they're now drying and klook absolutely brilliantly clean! handy, cheap and cost effective! but time consuming! there u go brand new old windows! charly

Yes, I have done similar with my windows. Be careful though when removing stubborn bits as kitchen 'scotch cloths' (green bit on the back of the sponge) can scratch the glass. But it's not the end of the world though as a cutting compound (toothpaste etc) can remove the scratches.

Those scotch pads/wipes are excellent for polishing marks off new or used shell bearing white metal surfaces before fitting/refitting.
