Why am I blind now Roy

Saw it quite clearly in Whiteabbey for about 30 seconds before the clouds covered it

It got cold and a bit dark in London, solid cloud though

Just seen on the news reports of a Scotsman stood in the street gazing up at the sky, looking through a welding mask shouting "it's never the coil"

Just in case anyone doubts that Derbyshire is Gods chosen place, at the point of maximum eclipse the cloud thickened to the perfect density where we could all stand and watch the eclipse without welding goggles! Mind you in 1999 it was thick clouds and we saw bugger all.

Bit like anticipating Nigella Lawson, but getting Liza Minelli.....

But when viewed through thick cloud......

Bit dodgy using a welding mask. Prof.Brian Cox warned against using them on last night's 'Stargazing Live'. And sunglasses LOL

Forced to do a Physics mechanics exam during the eclipse so I missed everything! Apparently I didn't miss much though, the sky changed from a sort of dove grey to a sort of yukon grey, then back again. I did 'witness' the 1999 eclipse in France but I was only one at the time.

I guess the welding mask warning covers differing grades of darkness. My old mig welding mask was fine this morning (didn't risk the self darkening one) and was shared between myself, the postman and a customer... Clear skies and a cracking view in Worcestershire.
Remembering the 1999 one, whilst working in Manchester. About a dozen of us outside with welding masks on and the foreman commenting that he'd no idea there was so many welding masks on the premises - everyone seemed to have their own stash secreted under a bench somewhere....

Brian Cox warned against using welding GOGGLES !! These are designed only for gas welding, and are not dark enough for looking at the sun. My auto dim mask was perfect = the darkness could be adjusted depending on whether the sun was partially obscured with cloud - or was in clear sky.

Ah, that makes sense. Gas welding goggles wouldn't have been up to the job at all...

Didn't see a bloody thing, cloud cover was so thick over Reading that it did not even bother to get any darker.
Saw the total in Cornwall in 1999 though
