I have just noticed that placing a search for my 1956 Morris Minor 1000 the box for Mot now comes up as Mot exempt as opposed to Mot expired. When did this take place?

I think it was some time in 2012, but I am sure someone will have the actual date

It could not have been that early? Unless they have slowly being working through the list of cars, and my car was near the end. I remember checking after christmas and it was still saying Mot expired and more crucially I did not have the car then and since having the car it has been sorned and it was definatly red with an Mot expiry date.

I did a check on one of mine in the last couple of weeks and didn't like the big red box with MOT expired (this is using the new BETA service).
Just checked, after reading your post, and it has changed to a nice tourquise blue MOT Exempt - much nicer.
So the change on the DVLA website is very recent, but the change to the MOT exemption rules changed in November 2012 (as Andy stated).

Yes, definitely MOT except, like my 1955 Austin. Whether they should be or not is controversial! Please keep it safe,even though you don't have to get it a ticket every year.

Good grief That would be a real bangers charter when that happens. Its bad enough now with pre 60 exemption. I've got folk queuing up top buy my A30 with rotten sills just because it works and its 'technically' on the road...

Though I do believe in such circumstances the police can seize the vehicle if it is not road worthy, so hopefully that would reduce the chance of people using such vehicles on the road.

Well yes, or at least get the ticket to get repairs done in so many days - guess it would depend on how dangerous/falling apart the cops deem it to be. Sadly, living in a very rural area, theres plenty of folk who would take the chance...

My MoT man's had someone come in with a newly acquired moggie which had had the nearside front spring-hanger come up through the floor when the plywood gave way.. a new purchase that had not been on the road for some years. Personally I think I would prefer to be ready for my one and only trip in the Traveller hearse before they let the exemption go on a rolling 30-year basis.
Yes, and you did read that right, someone had put a bit of plywood under the floor where the spring-hanger had rotted out - the customer had done about 12 miles on a busy dual carriageway before it too disintegrated!

Just had a 61 saloon come in with the suspension eyebolt almost pulled through the chassis leg Combination of internal rust and stress cracks It must have looked reasonably ok at first glance, with the cracks hidden by road dirt, albeit before the nut disappeared into the chassis leg... Good job its a 61 and the MOT tester would have spotted it even if the owner hadn't commented on a 'funny noise'.

The same thing happened on my '60, funnily enough!
Eyebolt pulled right through, nut was sitting in the chassis leg, eyebolt sitting sort of 3/4" proud at the side at a horrific angle. and the suspension arm was resting on the tie plate. Only really the tie bar holding it square!
Only noticed it as it was sitting low on one side.
They have an internal bracket spot welded in, which is great. But once the spot welds rot through, the eyebolt moves through the thin chassis leg metal, and that's it!
