changing (wich?) exhaust valves - dutch Minor

dear all,

Since 2 months now, my dad and I bought a lovely yellowish Minor 1971.

Being a good bases for a (partly) restauration, after 3 weeks rolling around the block to see what we've bouhgt, we started dismantling ;-)

4 new wings (thanks to ESM) are ready to go to the painter next week (as the bonnet and hood) some (lots) of new/better chrome parts en some minor things.

Now working on the engine. Engine is out, and totally in (cleaned) parts. Damage until now; 1 broken pistonring (already broken, not with dismantling) bearings (big-end & mains) worn but cranckcase taps good and camshaft worn. clutchplate worn and release bearing totally worn....

New parts already on the ESM orderlist, but here's my question;

Inlet valves and seats are fine.
Exhaust valves are black, seats (heavily?) pitted. So will have seats cut in (as little as possible) and will order new valves.

No 'lead- free' conversion wanted because of low expeted milage/year.

My question is to order what valves / collets exactly......

my actualy valve-assembly looks like this;

So i would realy appreciate if anyone could give me some advice of using what type of valve....

Later on i will introduce myself properly...sorry for just bumping in with my question....
:oops:
thanks,

daniel

You need the second option - otherwise you would also need matching caps to go with the first option valves. Yes - cut the seats - but FIRST - put in new valve guides - probably best to renew all 8, and then you can use the much better 'top hat' oil seals on the inlet valves ONLY. http://www.minispares.com/product/Class ... o%20search

I'm surprised that the camshaft is worn??? Are you sure?? Can we see a picture ? What do the cam followers look like ? Be sure to fit a NEW oil pump !

The wear on the guides can be seen there. A very light touch with a cutter will sort out the exhaust seats - the inlets look grand - just a light touch - or even just hand lap with paste.

Hello BMC, thanks for the quick reply ;-) !

so my actual valve assembly (without the circlip) is the 'older one collet' (2A11) of what ESM is talking ?

good advice about the valve-guides...althoug the 'free-play' of the stems in the guid isnt taht much, it is mor for (properly) fitting the top-hat seals, isnt it ?

No picture of the cam, but 6 of the 8 cams are really worn, as are the cam-followers....will replace them all.

New oilpump is already on the list....

I wasnt sure about wicht valve at ESM, that is why i didnt order yet....

Hi BMC;

what exactly do you mean with; the wear on the guides can be seen here ?

Indeed, i wasnt planning touching the inlet-seats, just hand-lapping it will be...

sorry, no pic of the camshaft right now, wil make one this evening....for me it was too clear to be in dount, but i will share them ;-)

There is a slight ovality in the guides - I have seen MUCH worse - so keep them if you wish - but may give blue smoke and increased oil consumption. A new AEA 630 camshaft will be expensive - you may wish to take the opportunity to upgrade to something slightly better! If so - hold off on the oil pump - the 'better' cams use a different (and better) oil pump.....

This would be a really good 'torquey' camshaft in a 1098 engine -and the price is right!

as promised, a pic of my worn camshaft....

i was thinking about an exchange shaft from esm; http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/pro ... 8b53f39dba

just keeping it kind of Original is fine for me ;-)

mmm...ovality in the guides....oke, will think about it ....good advice too !

So for the valves / collets i will be fine with the

valves....using my old collets...

so tomorrow i will order al the parts ![frame]Image[/frame]

Oh dear I have never seen a cam THAT bad ! Was the engine running on oil - or water ?? I suspect that won't be a suitable exchange... And a reconditioned cam shaft must surely have been 'reground' -which I would avoid. The cam I pointed to is an EXCELLENT buy - and has the wider lobes of course. Highly recommended for a nice torquey engine. If I had any plans to be building an engine any time soon (which sadly I don't...) I would have this cam in an instant - especially at that price.... It requires this oil pump.... http://www.minispares.com/product/Class ... o%20search
With that wear on the camshaft - are you sure the crankshaft is ok to use without a regrind?? Also - check that the oil filter has a plate and spring beneath the filter cartidge - the cam wear suggests unfiltered oil has been circulating.....for a long time.......

well, your guess is (partly) right; on one side of the camshaft the cams where badly worn, the orthers didnt seems to be affected...i think of the (almost blocked) breather device is to blame...when removing the inspection cover there was a lot of sludge, especcially building up around those cams and followers....

crank and bigend looks very normal; no signs of copper anyway, no scratches, no nothing....
Oilfilter is the later 'screw on' so thats just how it should be....no other signs of excepotional wear then those four out of eight cams....

Well,

Head is back; 8 new guides, 4 new exhaust seats and 4 new ex.valves....lead-free now!
Al valves have been (..?..) (forgot the word) om there seats by the recon.shop too, so things are going fine !

Soon engine back into life !

Thans for THE feedback so far !

Daniel

I would carefully take the sharp off the combustion chambers - the head has been skimmed. Don't make a noticeable chamfer - just scrape the sharp edge away to reduce pre-ignition risk.
