As is now well known tax discs are a thing of the past (sadly). But it does seem a little ridiculous that we still have to apply for them for classic machines.
Yesterday I received the tax renewal for my 1947 AJS, Obviously it's free as it's a historic vehicle but on the renewal it states I can renew at my post office by presenting the renewal, payment (none) and a current mot certificate which being pre 1960 I'm not required to have.
So in essence I'm required to present just my piece of paper they sent (renewal) at a post office to renew something that costs nothing and I no longer receive.
But if I fail to do so they'll fine me!

Monty Python, Two Ronnies? (Four Candles). Anybody a certain age would probably agree with me. It comes under the "you couldn't make it up" category.

Can't you do it online? I have taxed my 61 landrover with no problem.

You can do it online.
It's just the idea of having to apply for something that costs nothing, you don't receive anything and if you don't they fine you for not bothering (or forgetting now there's no disc to remind you).

I did mine at the Post Office. It all went well until she needed to select method of payment. 'Barter?' I suggested, 'I give you nothing, you give me nothing.' Actually you do get a receipt from the Post Office which is reassuring if like me you don't trust paperless systems. A friend once sorned his car and was later accused of not having done so by DVLA (with penalty demand) but fortunately he had a Post Office receipt for the transaction. In a rural area these transactions also help the viability of the local Post Office.

i did mine online printed out the acknowledgement and thats it done easy

That's only easy if you have a printer.

They do have to check that the car is insured......otherwise it is a pointless procedure.....

Yes it is,of course. Hopefully these silly little anomalies will be ironed out in due course.

Technology is amazing. Sometimes the rationale behind it can be a bit iffy.

There will be more good cars going to the scrap yard early now . If you cannot sell the car quick enough and have nowhere to leave a car on a SORN it will be easer to scrap then to get a fine . or we buy any car.

I feel a bit sorry for the companies that make Tax disc holders

Its purely for SORN .how can they control uninsured vehicles,which is more important than taxation as far as I am concerned.I think its a good system to at least get at the yobs who run about with no cover.
On another point,I was informed that since they stopped issuing paper tax discs,the prosecution level for no insurance and mot has gone up loads,Before ,under the old tax disc system the police and traffic wardens,tended to just see a valid disc and pass by assuming the other docs were in order,now they are checking more cars via the comp.because the screen is blank and finding a lot more no tax and expired insurance cases. Has to be a better system if it gets them off the road.
