Running problems.

Got my van going after a few months parked up. Had running for twenty odd minutes to get the water warm as I was putting antifreeze in. Just before I turned it off, I reverse it and it missed. When I put my foot down there was a delay before it picked up. After I turned it off it wouldn't start after about 1/2 hr it started I thought it might be because it had cooled down.
It's got a good spark.
Thoughts please.

From the symptoms it sounds like an ignition fault.

It's pumping plenty fuel. Will strip carb and give it a clean. Bet it's not been off since the 80's, if it's been off!!

Tip a wee cup of fuel down the carb throat - if it runs the ignition is fine.

When it was running on fast idle, it ran fine. So fuel must be ok and the fuel is only a few months old. When I had fuel pipe off to check pump was working I spat some down the carb, it made no difference??

Well the problem then is indeed ignition - although you say it has a good spark........

Got the carb off tonight, it needed coming off as one of the 3 screws holding the float chamber on had stripped the threads. It had been like this for about 18 months. Stripped and cleaned and new float chamber( second hand) and glad to say it runs sweet.
Not been on the road yet but I think it should be fine.
The only thing I found was the valve thing in the float chamber was a bit dirty, wondered if it was sticking.

They often are - 40+ years old !! The 3 screws only hid the lid on the float chamber - so no big deal if one screw was stripped - how did that happen ???

When I first got it running after many years I must of wanted to clean the bowl out and snapped a screw getting it out.
Would the sticking valve caused the problem.

It usually sticks open and causes flooding....but just maybe yours stuck shut, although a bit unlikely.
