Have no links or affiliations to this store whatsoever, but just now they are selling a set of cased digital calipers in hardened stainless steel for the ludicrous price of £8.99p. Perhaps not up to precision engineering standards, but with a 3 year guarantee can you really go wrong!?[frame][/frame][frame][/frame]

They look good I don't think you can go wrong at that price .I am always amazed how they can afford to make them and ship them for such a cheap price

Thanks for the link trouble is I don't have an Ebay account so I'd be looking to go to Aldi's if it was bought very recently as I was there some time last week at my local branch and they wern'ton sale then but that was around mid weekish.

I dont think you need an account to buy it now on ebay..

Went on sale this last Thursday or thereabouts.

Ah right thanks for the info on EBay I never realized you could just "buy it now " without having an account, and roughly when the calliper was on sale I'll take a look at my local branch tomorrow.

Bought the bench pillar drill from Lidl (69 euro in Ireland )
Had to drill a lot of 10.5 mm holes in three 6mm flat iron strips, low speed, coolant , coped with the task very well, not for precision drilling though, using mine for some fence and gate fabrication.

Nice one MarkyB, just got one to 'adjust' some plaster coving.

As regards the digital calliper - if you can borrow a test piece from a micrometre you can see if your digital calliper is accurate and if it is spot on or slightly out plus or minus and then you can adjust your readings/measurements accordingly.
I have a similar digital calliper and having checked it against a micrometre test piece (similar to below) I found it was 0.001 out at normal room temperature - so I then knew how accurate/inaccurate it was and therefore can adjust my readings accordingly.
Knowing how accurate the digital calliper is of great benefit and much easier to use than a traditional micrometre.

I have an equally cheap set of digital calipers and have checked them against a set of calibration gauges and they are spot on. The only down side is that the battery life is terrible even with recognised brand batteries!

I agree about the battery.I had one a couple of years ago and ended up removing them till I needed to use it.Then one day it no longer worked.Mind you they were about £12 then.At a fiver it doesnt really matter if they dont last that long plus Aldi have a good warranty.Thats another thing.Aldi shift so much stuff that you'll find if you have to take something in for replacement under warranty you'll probably have to make do with a refund.They just get the stuff in and sell it all so no replacements until they come in again.Amongst many other items I have had from there I had a die grinder and cut-off saw.Bought them as the price was good.When I finally came to use them weeks later found they were faulty.No stock so got a refund.
